Pediatric-Mouthguards-Richardson-TXAn accidental fall during physical activity or participating in contact sports can lead to facial traumas and dental injuries. To help prevent facial trauma and protect our patients’ oral health, our team at Robert E. Morgan, DDS, and Associates offers custom made mouthguards for sports.

Dental and facial injuries can deeply affect a patient’s quality of life, wellbeing, and oral health. In some cases, severe injuries can lead to damaged nerves, deep lacerations, knocked out teeth, and broken facial bones. Some patients who have experienced facial traumas may require oral surgery, orthodontic treatment, and emergency care. This is why many medical professionals—especially dentists—recommend that patients wear protective mouthguards during physical activity where one is likely to lose balance, fall, or come into contact with people or surfaces that may cause damage. Common activities where a mouthguard should be worn include sports like football, basketball, and hockey along with rollerblading and skateboarding.

When worn properly, a custom-fitted mouthguard can help prevent injuries to the teeth and soft oral tissues. In fact, even when encountering blunt force to the face, a mouthguard can keep teeth intact in their rightful position while also preventing injury to the gums or sensitive tissues that line the cheeks.

If your child participates in high-risk sports and activities, we encourage you to inquire about receiving a mouthguard. Our team will take impressions (molds) of your child’s teeth so that the mouthguard will fit comfortably in his or her mouth when worn. Many store-bought mouthguards are ill fitting and are less likely to be worn by patients because they are uncomfortable. A comfortable mouthguard, however, is more likely to be worn and therefore more able to give parents and their children peace of mind during exercise and sports activities.
